How to use the PPF calculator

  1. Enter how much you’ll deposit each year, from ₹500 to ₹1.5 lakh.
  2. Check the current PPF rate at your post office or bank. The calculator starts at 7.1%, and you can change it.
  3. Choose the years. The account runs for 15 years, and you can extend it in blocks of 5 years.

How to read your result

Total deposited is your yearly amount multiplied by the years. Interest earned is the growth on top, and the maturity amount is the two together. PPF interest and the maturity amount are currently tax-free.

For example, ₹1.5 lakh a year for 15 years is ₹22.5 lakh deposited. At 7.1%, the maturity amount comes to about ₹40.68 lakh, so the interest earned is about ₹18.18 lakh. If the rate changes during those years, your real figure will change too.

PPF interest is worked out on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month. So depositing early in the year, before 5 April, earns interest for the full year. Thinking about 80C? Read ELSS vs PPF to compare the two.

How the PPF calculator works

It assumes you deposit at the start of each year, and that interest is added once a year and then earns interest itself. P is your yearly deposit, r is the yearly rate (7.1% is 0.071), n is the number of years, and A is the maturity amount.

A = P × ({[1 + r]^n − 1} ÷ r) × (1 + r)

FAQ

Common questions

What is a PPF calculator?
A PPF calculator shows what your yearly deposits in a Public Provident Fund account could grow to, at the interest rate you enter, over 15 years or longer.
What is the current PPF interest rate?
The government sets the PPF rate every quarter, so it can change. The calculator starts at 7.1% only as a default. Check the current rate at your post office or bank and enter it.
Can I take money out before 15 years?
PPF has a 15-year lock-in. After the first few years, you can take out part of the balance within limits, and early closure is allowed only in special cases. Check the current rules with your post office or bank.
What happens after 15 years?
You can close the account and take the money, or extend it in blocks of 5 years, with or without new deposits. Change the years in the calculator to see what an extension could add.
Does PPF save tax?
Under the old tax regime, your PPF deposit counts towards Section 80C. The new tax regime doesn’t allow 80C. PPF interest and the maturity amount are currently tax-free. Tax rules change, so check with your CA.
Do you open PPF accounts?
No. PPF accounts are opened at a post office or bank. We help families with mutual funds and insurance, and we can show you how PPF fits alongside an ELSS or a SIP.
